AI Ads Are Becoming Conversations: What Changed in September 2026
Google and OpenAI introduced new ways to ask product questions around ads. Here is what launched, what remains limited, and how advertisers can prepare.

A video ad can now lead to a product conversation without sending the viewer away from YouTube. A ChatGPT ad can invite a user into a separate conversation with a business-sponsored agent. Two September 2026 announcements put a sharper shape on a question advertisers have been asking for years: what happens after someone notices an ad but still needs an answer?
The answer is beginning to look less like another landing page view and more like a guided exchange. The launches are different, and neither establishes that every advertiser can use conversational ads today. Together, they give marketers a useful blueprint for preparing product information, guardrails, and measurement.
What Google and OpenAI actually announced
On September 24, Google introduced Business Agent for YouTube Ads in its Demand Gen update. Google says viewers can engage with conversational AI alongside video ads that use product feeds and get immediate answers about products or brands while staying in the viewing context. The announcement includes a sign-up link; it does not say the feature is generally available to all advertisers.
On September 16, OpenAI said it was testing Sponsored Agents with select advertisers in the United States. A user can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking a ChatGPT ad. OpenAI says that conversation is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation.
The surfaces differ: one is a product conversation beside a YouTube video ad; the other is an opt-in conversation reached from a ChatGPT ad. The common thread is a product question asked while interest is fresh. That is our reading of the announcements, not a performance claim by either company.
Why this changes the advertiser’s job
Traditional creative has to earn attention and a click. A conversational ad also needs to answer the next question accurately. If a shopper asks whether a table fits a small room, whether a plan includes a required feature, or when an item ships, generic ad copy will not help. The product data behind the experience becomes part of the creative.
This makes three operational jobs more valuable: keeping product facts current, defining which questions the brand should answer, and deciding when a human or a product page should take over. These are preparation steps for any conversational format; the announcements do not prove that a particular workflow will improve conversion rates.
A practical checklist for brands
- 1. Audit answerable product facts. Check feeds and landing pages for current prices, availability, dimensions, compatibility, plan limits, shipping terms, and return policies. Record who owns each fact and how quickly it changes.
- 2. Collect real pre-purchase questions. Use customer support, sales calls, site search, and product reviews to identify the questions that appear between first interest and a decision. Prioritize a narrow category rather than trying to answer everything.
- 3. Set response boundaries. Specify approved claims, exclusions, sensitive topics, and when the experience should direct a person to a verified source or human support. Keep sponsored participation clearly labeled.
- 4. Measure the whole journey. Track qualified ad exposure, the decision to open a conversation, useful engagement, site visits, and downstream actions where the platform makes those signals available. Compare against a suitable baseline before changing budgets.
- 5. Start with one test. Choose a product with a complex but well-documented buying decision. Write down the questions the experience must answer, the outcome you expect, and the failure cases you will review.
Where AdMesh fits
AdMesh approaches this shift through Brand Agents that carry brand context, eligibility rules, and messaging guardrails into relevant AI recommendation moments. That is AdMesh’s own infrastructure for AI conversation advertising; it is not the same product as Google’s Business Agent or OpenAI’s Sponsored Agents, and these announcements do not imply an integration between them. For a brand, the immediate work is similar across surfaces: make product knowledge usable, define where sponsorship belongs, and measure actual exposure and outcomes.

The takeaway
September’s news makes conversational advertising more concrete. Google is bringing product answers closer to a video ad, while OpenAI is testing an optional sponsored exchange after an ad click. Advertisers that can answer precise buyer questions with accurate facts, clear disclosure, and disciplined measurement will be better prepared to evaluate these formats as access expands.
